Root canal treatment removes damaged or infected pulp inside a permanent tooth. The canals are cleaned and sealed, and the tooth is then restored.

Deep decay, cracks or injury can affect the pulp. Untreated infection can lead to pain, swelling and damage around the root.

- Persistent tooth pain
- An extensively damaged tooth
- Swelling or a suspected infection
What a visit may involve
- Examine the tooth and take appropriate X-rays.
- Discuss treatment, anaesthesia and alternatives.
- Clean and seal the canals, then arrange a suitable filling or crown.
A deeply decayed permanent tooth may be retained with root canal treatment and a protective restoration if it is restorable.
